Morocco's pro-democracy 'February 20 Movement' marks fifth anniversary

Morocco

Hundreds of protesters in Morocco gathered at the country’s capital to mark the fifth anniversary of the February 20 Movement.

February 20 Movement a pro-democracy Arab Spring movement began in 2011 when thousands took to the streets across the country to demand for political and social reforms in the country.

In solidarity, the demonstrators called for freedom, dignity, social justice and power to the people.

Five years down the line, little progress has been made and the movement is still calling for more to be done.

“Morocco sadly sanctifies social inequality and most citizens don’t enjoy their dignity”, said Omar Balafrej, a member of the Moroccan leftist parties federation while speaking to the AFP.

But according to the country’s authorities, most of the demands were met after King Mohammed VI introduced constitutional reforms in 2011.
